Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, about 700 km north of Bangkok and an hour's flight away. The city is compact: a moated Old City with more than thirty temples, surrounded by newer districts.
Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) to the west has the cafés and boutique hotels; the Night Bazaar and the Ping River to the east have the larger hotels and evening markets.
Day trips go up Doi Suthep to the hilltop temple, out to ethical elephant sanctuaries, to Doi Inthanon — Thailand's highest peak — and to the craft villages around San Kamphaeng.
Fly into CNX — the airport is practically in town — and take a short private transfer. Overnight trains and buses from Bangkok take 10–12 hours.
Hotels, resorts and villas in Chiang Mai with room-type booking and an e-voucher for the property.
Day trips, shows and experiences in Chiang Mai with pick-up details and cancellation terms stated on each tour.

The Old City puts you on foot among the temples and the Sunday market; Nimman is better for cafés and nightlife; the Riverside suits resort-style stays. Everything is within a 15-minute drive.

November to early February is cool and clear. Avoid late February to April if air quality matters to you, as this is the regional burning season.
