Surat Thani Province · Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand off Surat Thani. Its small airport (USM) is in the north-east, minutes from the main beaches.
Chaweng is the longest beach and the centre of nightlife and shopping; Lamai to the south is a calmer version. Bophut's Fisherman's Village and Maenam on the north coast are quieter, and Choeng Mon near the airport has small coves and upscale resorts.
Boat trips go to Ang Thong National Marine Park, Koh Tao for diving and Koh Phangan; on the island itself are the Big Buddha, Na Muang waterfalls and the Fisherman's Village Friday market.
Fly into USM directly or via Bangkok, or fly to Surat Thani (URT) and take the bus and ferry combination. Private transfers from the airport reach any beach within 30 minutes.

Unlike Phuket and Krabi, Samui's driest months run from January to August, with October to December the wettest. It is the usual choice for a Thai beach holiday in June, July and August.
A private transfer from USM to Chaweng takes 10–15 minutes; Lamai about 30 minutes.
